Again, I went to a place I had already been, the Eichwald grove by the Luzerner Allmend. The weather was similarly curious today as back in February, changing light and rain in coming.

Heute ging ich nochmals in den Eichwald hier bei der Luzerner Allmend. Das Wetter war ähnlich komisch wie dazumal im Februar, wechselhaftes Licht und Regen in der Luft.

The Uetliberg Tower is an imposing work of architecture. The satellite dishes can be seen, ghostly, on the inside of the glassed-in room. One would think that ther eis some sort of restaurant up there, but the tower is quite empty. Places to picnic are set up all over, though, and pretty trails to mountain bike and hike are all around.

Der Uetliberg Turm ist ein mächtig dreinschauendes Bauwerk. Die Satellitenschüsseln stehen im Innern hinter Glas geisterhaft herum. Man sollte meinen, dort oben müsste es doch ein Restaurant geben, aber der Turm ist menschenleer. Picknickplätze gibt es dafür rundherum und schöne Pfade zum Mountain-biking und wandern.

A one-time sort of sunset happened today. The sun went down in a haze that colored the sky for a very long time. On the outlook tower (where I was when I painted this) it is always very windy. I had to watch out that my painting didn't fly away.

Ein eigenartiger Sonnenuntergang bot sich uns heute. Die Sonne ging im Dunst unter, der noch lange danach den ganzen Himmel verfärbte. Auf dem Aussichtsturm ist es immer sehr windig. Ich musste aufpassen, dass mir das Papier nicht entwischte.

Many thanks to the alphorn maker in Kriens, Mr. Stocker, that he let me paint this horn. If you are not from Switzerland, you probably recognize this traditional alpen instrument from the old Ricola commercials on TV.

Here in the Airforce-Center in Dübendorf I felt transported to another time and place. The airplanes were so strange to me. I couldn't have just sat down and begun painting--that wouldn't have brought anything good forth. I have plans for this colored sketch, which is why the price isn't there yet. Hier im Flieger-FLAB Museum fühlte ich mich ein paar mal wie versetzt, die Flugzeuge sind so fremdartig. Ich konnte nicht einfach drauflosmalen, das hätte nichts von sich gegeben. Ich habe noch einiges mit dieser kolorierten Skizze vor, darum steht der Preis noch nicht.

Der Regen sucht in dieser Woche die ganze Schweiz heim, sogar das Tessin! Aber hier, beim Lago Tremorgio, auf 1851 m. ü. M., habe ich ein tockenes Plätzchen gefunden. Atemberaubend!

Awe-inspiring and mighty are these alps, simply unimaginable. Beside gigantic formations in stone are fields so thick as an animal's pelt with flowers so lovingly-colored woven through it...I would have painted it, had it not just begun to rain as I was ready to add them. The rain persuaded me to begin my descent. Before I did, I saw--among other insects--one single honeybee. Someone has to carry on the life up there.

Gewaltig diese Alpen, einfach unfassbar. Nebst riesigen Steinformationen gibt es Wiesen so dicht wie Pelz, und Blümchen darauf so zart gefaltet und lieblich gefärbt... ich hätte sie gemalt, hätte es nicht gleich zu regnen begonnen und mich zum Abstieg bewogen. Zuvor sah ich - nebst anderem Gefleuch - sogar noch eine einzige Biene. Irgend jemand muss ja auch da oben noch das Leben weitertragen.

Barry is the world-famous St. Bernard dog. People come to the Natural History Museum all the way from Japan and China, just to see him. He lived in the last century and was trained by the monks in the St. Bernard monastary to rescue people. Over 40 people were said to have been rescued from avalanches by him.
Trivia: Unbeknownst to many, the small keg--supposedly filled with schnapps--is a fantasy which came later into the tales of the famous St. Bernard dogs.

The Alpine Museum opens one's eyes for Swiss geography! Not only do they have amazing, built to scale relief maps of many famous alps, but detail how the mapping works. This is how cartographers of old used to work.

Angelika begleitete mich heute ins Napfgebiet. Wir wanderten etwas anders als geplant, denn der Bus, den wir nehmen wollten, war ein Bus auf Reservation! Also liefen wir halt von ganz unten hoch auf's "Bergli", wo uns nach nur 40 Minuten eine fantastische Aussicht anbot. Später unterbrachen wir unsere Wanderung und liefen zurück an diese Stelle, wo ich dieses Bild malte. Kaum hatte ich den letzten Pinselstrich gemalt, fielen die ersten Tropfen auf das Bild. Nun kam das Gewitter gewaltig in unsere Richtung, wir liefen wieder runter, das Bild im Koffer. Gleich am Bahnhof Haslen angekommen schüttete es aus vollen Kannen. Wir im Zug. Glück gehabt!

Angelika came with me today in the Napf region of canton Lucerne. We hiked a different path than planned, because we found out at the Hasle train station that the bus we wanted to take was one we should have called in the morning and reserved!
So, we hiked instead from there to a place called Bergli, where just after 40 minutes of further hiking presented a beautiful outlook. Later we backtracked our hike (We were heading to Romoos) and came back here, where I painted this.
I had barely finished the last paintbrushstrokes when the first few raindrops fell on the picture. The Napf region is well-known for its swift and moody thunderstorms, and just such a one was coming swiftly towards us! We hiked double-time back to the Hasle train station, the picture safely packed away. Seconds after we seated ourselves in the waiting booth at the station, it started raining buckets. We caught the train back home, only getting a little wet. What luck!

Ich hatte leider nur wenig Zeit, hier an der Seepromenade des Lago di Lugano bei Melide. (rund 50 min). Ein Ehepaar machte mich auf den Himmel hinter mir aufmerksam: Ein gewaltiges Gewitter kam uns entgegen, so dass Lugano aus der Sicht verschwand. Ich malte noch rasch den See, packte zusammen. Gerade noch rechtzeitig kam ich am Bahnhof an, als aus auf die wenigen Tropfen eine Unmenge folgte.

I unfortunately only had a little time, here on the lake promenade from the Lake of Lugano by Melide. (About 50 minutes.) A married couple pointed out the brooding clouds behind me: a violent thunderstorm was coming upon us, apparently swallowing up the city of Lugano as it came. I quickly-quickly painted the lake, then packed my things together. I arrived just in time at the train station as out of the few warning raindrops I had felt turned into a downpour.

Nach dem Gewitter fuhr ich eine Haltestelle weiter nach Paradiso, wo ich die Bahn auf den San Salvatore nehmen wollte, doch die letzte Fahrt hatte ich um 30 min verpasst. "Nach em Räge schynt d Sunne". Der Himmel änderte sich aber alle 30 Sekunden, so dass dieses Bild innert zirka 40 minuten an die Zusammenstellung eines ganzen Ablaufs ist. Eine Palme gehörte eingentlich auch dazu, diese werde ich ev. noch einfügen.

After the heavy rainshower, I went one station further towards Paradiso, where I wanted to take the furnicular up to San Salvatore. But...the last ride I had missed by 30 minutes.
"Nach em Räge schynt d Sunne" ('After the rain, shines the sun'--a Swiss folk song and saying.) The sky changed every 30 seconds, so I can honestly say that this painting, which took me 40 minutes, portrays the changing sky. A palm tree also could go in this painting from the viewpoint I stood at, and I might add it in later.

In Bellinzona tat sich der Himmel nach dem Gewitter wieder auf, und ich dachte ich hätte Zeit, das ganze festzuhalten. Doch von wegen! Kurze Zeit später begann es wieder zu regnen. Ich nahm unterstand beim Eingang eines Treppenhauses, und malte das Bild fertig.

In Bellinzona the skies cleared up again after the thundershower, and I thought I had enough time to paint then. So I thought! Shortly afterwards, it began again to rain. I took shelter in the doorstoop of an apartment building, and finished painting the picture.

Ich fand es komisch, wie die Jesus-Statue hier vor dem "Pilatus" steht. 2 verschiedene Vögelchen machten auf seinem Daumen halt. Das Wetter wechselte von Sonnig zu gewitterhaft. Es war super für ein Bild mit Himmel.

I find it amusing how the statue of Jesus stands here before "Pilate". Two different birds took a rest on his thumbs. The weather was mercurial, changing from sun to thunderclouds. It was super for a painting of the sky.

Ich fuhr nach Goldau, um einen Hügel zu malen, der gerade abgetragen wurde. Als ich dort ankam, fand ich heraus, dass der Vordergrund vom Bild einmal hoch interessant war; eine alte Brücke, eine Sägerei, aber jetzt nur noch Baustelle. Da lief ich etwas enttäuscht den Berg hinauf. Zuerst bot sich der Zugersee an. Ich ging aber weiter hoch, über eine Wiese, höher und höher, in der Hitze des Tages. Dann lief ich an diesem Vehikel vorbei, und dachte mir, das ist es! Ich lief noch weiter, und hatte mich schon an einem anderen Ort niedergesetzt als ich merkte, dass mir die Zeit nur für ein Bild reichen würde. Also lief ich wieder zurück zum Traktor.

I went to Goldau, to paint a hill that was being constructed on. When I arrived, I found out that the foreground used to be really interesting: an old bridge, a sawmill, but now it was simply one big construction lot. So I walked, disappointed, back down the hill. At first I thought of painting the Lake of Zug. I went up again, higher than before, across a field, higher and higher...in the heat of the day. Then I walked by this farm vehicle, and thought, "That's it!" I walked a little further and had already sat down at one point before I realized the time was only enough for one picture, not two.
So I went back to the tractor.

Die letzten Sonnenstrahlen erhellten den Hügel bei Hedingen, da lief ich den einzigen Weg hoch, der mir in den wenigen Minuten blieb. Ich fand dieses Bauernhaus und machte mich sogleich an die Arbeit. Die Sonne war gerade untergegangen, als ich nur noch die Schattenseite des Hauses in der Mitte frei hatte.

The last sunbeans brightened the hills by Hedingen, and I walked the only way up higher that was still reachable within the timetable I had. I found this farmhouse and promptly sat down to work. When the sun finally went down, I only had the shadowed side in the middle of the house to do.
