Hier in Bonstetten traf ich einen Freund. Dieser Raum bedeutet ihm sehr viel, nicht zuletzt, da das Gebäude vielleicht nicht mehr lange steht. Heute war etwas anderes geplant, das ins Wasser fiel. Dafür wurde dieses Bild möglich.

Here in Bonstetten I met a friend. This building means a lot to him, and not only because it won't be there much longer. (In two years there are plans to rebuild.) Today, something else was planned that just didn't end up happening, but because of that cancelled plan, this painting was possible.

Ich erlaubte mir, noch ein Bild bei Bonstetten zu malen, und zwar die tolle Aussicht oberhalb des Dorfs. Ein Luftballoon schebte noch durch die Landschaft, den werde ich nachträglich noch einfügen... ich war zu sehr mit den Farben des Sonnenuntergangs beschäftigt.

I allowed myself to paint another picture in Bonstetten, and specifically the cool view from the hill above the town. A hot-air balloon drifted through the landscape. I will add it in later...at the time I was kept quite busy with the colors of the sunset.

In diesem Becken herrscht eine Strömung, so dass die Leute im Kreis 'fahren'. Der Turm ist ein wahrzeichen des Thermalbads in Zurzach. Ich kam gerade rechtzeitig, um die sanfte Abendstimmung einzufangen. Dann gingen die Lampen der Schwimmbecken an, es sah kunstvoll aus. Vielen Dank der Belegeschaft, dass ich heute bei Ihnen malen durfte!

Thermal baths in Bad Zurzach

In this pool (There are multiple pools at the baths), there is such a current created by the underwater jets, that people are swung around and around--like in a washing machine. The tower is the well-known sign for the thermal baths in Zurzach. I came just at the right time to catch the soft evening light's mood. Then the lights in the pools came on, and it looked very aesthetic. Many thanks to the employees which allowed me to paint there!
Angelika enjoyed it here too--but she was in the pools. :)

Was würde ich ohne den Wetterbericht wohl machen? Mich weniger Sorgen! Vermutlich erzählen die Meteorolgen uns absichtlich 'Schauer'-Märchen, damit wir vom Wetter immer positiv überrascht sind. Ich bin ja eigentlich einer, der auch den Regen als sehr positiv einstuft, und mich laut darüber bedanke. Darum beachte ich die Regenprognosen künftig nicht mehr, weil ich scho so oft trotz Prognose trocken stand, und blau malen konnte. Nur strömender Regen gleich vor meinem Fenster soll mich abhalten.

What would I do without the weather report? Worry less, that's what! Probably the meteorologists tell us fairy tales of "gloomy rainshowers" so that we're always pleasently surprised by the good weather.
I am the sort of person who looks at rain as a positive thing, and thank for it. This is why in the future I wish to take no notice of predictions of rain, because in the past I have so often been dry during such predictions, and could even have painted blue skies.
Only pouring rain before my windows shall hold me back now.

This is my second "Tree branch in swampy water" picture. It stands (or is sunk) a few meters beside the main street from Dietikon to Geroldswil. I saw it as I took a bus ride in my free time.

This morning it was snowing. I made my way towards Zürich...but halfway there I got out. I regretted the choice when I though that with this new snowfall, I could paint one of the planned winter-paintings in the inner part of Switzerland.
So I got in the next train back to Luzern, and changed trains there to go to the Stanserhorn.
After just one station, though, I got out--again--because Mt. Pilate looked awesome in the sunlight! Angelika brought me the bicycle, and I took the hiking/biking trail to a location I know in the nearby, Unterknollingen.
She and I went to this location last year in preparation for this project. It was April 16th, and the sun baked us for 5 hours while I painted seated on the bench, painting. This year it was the exact opposite! I froze by a crisp, biting wind that simply laughed at my jacket.
But I am very glad I didn't go to Zürich, and changed my mind...twice.

Heute morgen schneite es. Ich machte mich auf in Richtung Zürich. Auf halben Weg stieg ich aber aus, denn es reute mich, als ich daran dachte, dass ich mit diesem Schnee ein Winterbild in der Innerschweiz malen konnte. Also fuhr ich wieder zurück nach Luzern, um in Richtung Stanserhorn zu fahren. Nach einer Station stieg ich aber erneut aus, denn der Pilatus sah im Sonnenlicht so toll aus! Meine Frau brachte mir das Fahrrad, und ich machte mich auf, zu einem mir bekannten Ort. An diesen Ort ging ich ziemlich genau vor einem Jahr, in Vorbereitung für dieses Projekt. Es war damals der 16. April und die Sonne liess mich 5 Stunden schwitzen, während dem malen.Dieses Jahr war es gegenteilig, ich fror bei zügigem Wind. Jetzt bin ich mit diesem Entschluss voll zufrieden.

Mein erstes Bild, das ich nur mit Hilfe von Text und Strichen aus der Erinnerung nach-malte. Als ich im Zug nach Bonstetten sass, war dieser Sonnenuntergang im Gang, und ich hatte weder Fotoapparat noch Malzeug dabei. Ich glaube ich kam der Sache nahe!

My first painting that I painted from memory, with only the aid of a sketch with the names of colors where they were. As I was in the train to Bonstetten, this sunset was in motion, and I had neither camera or painting equipment with me. I think I came close to how it was!

Years ago, I set myself a goal: to learn to paint trees, practice, and become much better. I naturally never did this. Now, I allow myself to fulfill my old goal in the frame of this project when opportunities present themself, as did this beautiful blooming tree in a quiet cemetary did.

This is one of my favorite neighborhoods in my hometown. The more fields and lawns that disapper, the more I appreciate them. Somehow the streetnames "Wolfsmeadow" and "Fieldcrossing" make no sense anymore, when they only divide groups of houses into non-existant differences.

Das ist eines meiner lieben Quartiere meiner Heimatstadt. Je mehr Wiesen wie diese verschwinden, umso weniger werden Sie mir aber lieb sein. Irgendwie machen dann auch die Namensbezeichnungen "Wolfsmatt" und "Kreuzacher" keinen Sinn mehr, wenn sie nur noch Häusergruppen in fiktive Gruppen unterteile.

Here in the Foerrlibuck fields I trained when I was younger in the Young Grasshopper-Club. The training grounds are a fond memory. It was hard, to paint this painting without composing a concrete subject. I took photos of a team training, that I might paint in.
In the background, one sees the gas tanks, the Pfingstweid Street, the big Migros building, and on the right--covered by the trees--to soon-to-be-torn-down Harturm Stadium.

Hier im Foerrlibuck trainiert ein Teil der Jugend vom Grasshopper-Club. Die Plätze sind mir in guter Erinnerung. Es war schwierig, das Bild ohne konkretes Sujet originell zu komponieren. Auf Fotos habe ich eine trainierende Mannschaft, die ich ev. noch reinmalen werde. Im Hintergrund sieht man die Tankstelle, die Pfingstweidstrasse, das grosse Migros-Gebäude, und rechts verdeckt von den Bäumen das bald alte Hardturm Stadion.

I am a big fan of skies, so says a good friend of mine about me. He means especially my many photos that show at most a couple of tree tops, roofs or hill tops. This is my second pure sky painting in this series. It wasn't a spectacular sunset, the sun disappeared early behind a cloud wall.

Eigentlich bin ich ein grosser Himmel-Fan, so sagt's ein guter Freund über mich. Damit meinte er vor allem die vielen Fotos, die höchstens ein paar Baumwipfel, Hausdächer oder Hügelspitzen zeigten. Das ist nun mein zweites pures Himmelbild. Es war kein spektakulärer Sonnenuntergang. Die Sonne verschwand hinter diesen Wolken.

The goal this time was to paint the two 'skyscraper' apartment buildings from the town of Spreitenbach, and perhaps the church in the light of the setting sun.
I was travelling with the bike today, and got there around 6pm, so that I decided to paint the sunset in a roundabout way. I asked around, changed my direction, and when I found the right viewpoint to paint the towers and church from...I was on the cemetary.

Ziel war es, die 2 Wohntürme von Spreitenbach und ev. die Kirche im Abendlicht zu portraitieren. Ich war mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs, und es war erst etwa 18 Uhr, so dass ich den Sonnenuntergang nur indirekt malen wollte. Ich fragte mich herum, änderte die Richtung, und als ich meinen gewünschten Blickpunkt gefunden hatte, befand ich mich auf dem Friedhof.

This here was horrible to paint. Shortly after this beautiful blue sky, came a wall of rainclouds. It was a good thing that Angelika came with me today--she held the umbrella over us and my painting. Add to that discomfort, I had needed to go to the toilet since I sat down and began, how stressing!

Dies hier war schrecklich zu malen. Kurz nach diesem schönen Wolkenhimmel, kam eine Regenwand. Gut, hat mich Angelika heute begleitet, sie hielt den Regenschirm über mich. Ausserdem musste ich dringend auf die Toilette, wie nervig!

Just after finishing the above painting, the evening sky turned as red-pink as I'd hoped and imagined. I biked farther away from Spreitenbach so as to see more, and found a pedestrian's bridge that arched over the street and landscape, providing me with a great view.

Finally I go to canton Schaffhausen! This is the Rheinfall, the biggest (but not the highest) waterfall in Switzerland, and really is awesome to look at.
I had already set myself up--after climbing high on many steps--to paint this view. In summer, this viewpoint will be gone, covered by the tree's leaves. (The tree branches I left out in this painting. This is the advantage a painter has over a photographer!)

Endlich in Schaffhausen. Es ist der grösste Wasserfall (nicht der höchste), und wirklich gewaltig anzuschauen. Ich hatte mich schon eingerichtet, als ich wieder die vielen Treppen hoch stieg, um diese Ansicht zu malen, denn im Sommer würde sie durch Blattwerk verdeckt sein.

Sometimes I don't find the path, like this time in Feuerthalen, as I wanted a good view of the Munot castle. I wandered uphill, until I suddenly realized that I only walked farther and farther away from my subject.
I sat on a bench and ate my lunch. I did see the Munot Fort very nicely from here, but it was so small, and one could not see the Rhein river. I had to go down again.
On the way down, an orchard of fruit trees caught my attention. Somehow everything was right: the light, the background...so I sat myself down here at this quiet, restful place and painted this blooming cherry tree.

Manchmal finde ich den Weg nicht, wie dieses Mal in Feuerthalen, als ich eine gute Sicht auf den Munot brauchte. Ich wanderte bergauf, bis ich plötzlich merkte, dass ich hier nur weiter weg von meinem Sujet kam. Ich setzte mich auf eine Bank und ass zu Mittag. Ich sah die Munot Festung sehr schön von hier, aber sie war so klein, und man sah den Rhein nicht. Ich musste wieder runter. Beim runterwandern, fiel mir eine Gruppe von Obstbäumen auf. Irgendwie stimmte alles, das Licht, der Hintergrund, also setzte ich mich hier an diesem ruhigen Ort hin.

This painting I did from reference photos. I saw the snails on the sidewalk. They passed each other like on a street, and the image of two planes flying by one another in the sky came to mind. The snails were quite fast, certainly 30cm in a minute. The pavement was wet and gave wonderful colors. It would have been impossible to paint these two on location.

Dieses Bild habe ich anhand einer Foto gemacht. Die Schnecken sah ich auf dem Trottoir, sie kreuzten sich wie auf einer Strasse, und mir kamen zwei Flugzeuge in den Sinn, wie man sie oft am Himmel sieht. Die Schnecken waren sehr schnell, bestimmt 30 cm in der Minute. Der Boden war ideal nass. Es wäre unmöglich gewesen, die beiden vor Ort zu malen.

Again another painting with a time restrait. The cheese melted in the sun! The oily mark on the stones of that fountain is, I believe, still visible even after many months.

Schon wieder ein zeitlich bedingtes Bild. Der Käse schmolz in der Sonne dahin! Der Fettfleck auf dem Brunnenrand ist glaub ich heute, nach vielen Monaten, noch sichtbar.
