Heute fuhren wir zusammen an den Ort hin, wo ich im Herbst ein Bild malte, auf die Schwägalp. Ich wollte nochmals die gleiche Szene malen, doch alles war ganz anders, beinahe langweilig im ewigen grün des Sommers. Ohne bedenken widmete ich mich unserem Picknick. Gestärkt blickte ich hinüber und da waren Sie, grosse Wolken, zwischen uns und dem Säntis. Heute würde wohl nichts werden. wir wanderten noch ein Stück, da hielt ich an, machte Fotos, und bemerkte, wie schnell sich alles veränderte.Unmöglich konnte ich so malen... und doch konnte ich's nicht lassen.

Today we went together to that place where I painted a picture last autumn: Schwägalp in canton Appenzell. I wanted to paint the same scene of the Santis as before, but everything was different, almost boring in the eternal green of summer. Without concerning myself too much about it, I sat down and concentrated instead on our picnic.
Strengthened, I looked back towards the mountain and there they were--big clouds drifting between us and the Santis. Today wouldn't be anything, I thought. We wandered downhill a bit, I stopped, took photos, and noticed how fast everything changed. It would have been impossible to try and catch those clouds...but yet I couldn't leave it be.

Ein paar Minuten später warteten wir auf den Bus hinab nach Urnäsch. Da sah ich diese zwei Kühe und zückte zum Glück das rechte Werkzeug: Den Bleistift! Mir gelang eine schöne Skizze, die ich zuhause mit Hilfe einer Foto ausmalen konnte.

A while later, we were waiting on the bus to go back down into the valley to Urnäsch. There I saw these two cows and drew (luckily) the right drawing material from my bookbag: The pencil! I was able to make a wonderfully lively sketch, and at home and out of the rain I colored it with help from the reference photos.

Kaspars Garten ist wunderschön. Das Vogelhäuschen hat er selber gezimmert. Hier verarbeitet er gerade Johannisbeeren im Abendlicht.

Kasper's garden is wonderful. The birdhouse he made himself. Here he separates the redcurrents from their stems. What will become of them? Jam? Jelly? Sauce? Something fine for certain.

In Urnäsch hatten wir nur noch etwa 2 Stunden Zeit, also malte ich auf dem Voralpen-Express, mit seinen grosszügigen Tischen, weiter. Zum Glück merkte Angelika noch rechtzeitig, dass unser Zugwagon in Rapperswil abgehängt wurde.

In Urnäsch we only had about 2 hours of time before the Folklore and Culture Museum closed, so I ended up finishing this in the train. In the Voralpen Express there are large tables, and I was able to work well.
In fact, I concentrated so hard, I didn't notice something very important. Thankfully Angelika was with me, and she noticed it. In Rapperswil they uncoupled the wagon we were in to take it to a sideyard! Had we not (very swiftly) changed trains, who knows how long it would have taken to get home that day...

Hier in Brunnen setzte ich mich spontan auf den Steg. Spontan fuhr dann auch das Schiff weg, und ich hatte nur dieses rohe Ergebnis vor mir!

Here in Brunnen, I spontaneously decided to sit on the pier, and just as spontaneously the ship sailed away, leaving me with this raw result here!

Zopf gehört zu einem Sonntagsfrühstück! Doch was, wenn der Zopf so fein aussieht, dass man ihn nicht wagt anzuschneiden?
Die tolle Carosserie von diesem Zopf ist auch dem Bäcker Arnold hier in Luzern zu verdanken. Da musste ich fast nur noch gut hingucken!

Zopf, a special braided sweet white bread here in Switzerland, belongs to a traditional Sunday morning breakfast! But what if the zopf looks so pretty, that one can't bring themself to slice it?
The beautiful curves of this zopf are to thank the Arnold Bakery here in Luzern. All I had to do with this painting was look.

Dieses kleine Bildchen malte ich nach dem Treicheln Stilleben Nr. 68 vom 7. Oktober. Mir gefielen die Berge, und der Himmel, den ich auf dem Stilleben nicht gross gemalt hatte.

This small landscape I painted after the Treichlen (the cow bells) still-life, number 68, on October seventh. On this painting I like the sky and mountains that I didn't paint as extensively on the still-life.

We received a good pound or five of cherries from our kind neighbor, Edith. Angelika cut out the stones and made a very tasty jam from the dark, sweet fruits. Here they sit on the counter, cooling.

Unser Nachbarhaus bei Nacht schaute ich schon so viele Male an und malte im Kopf ein Bild davon. Da war es mir heute ein besonderes Vergnügen, ein kleines Bildchen davon zu malen.

Das perfekte Bild für einen Sanitär? Ich finde, so eine WC-Rolle ist doch etwas typisch schweizerisches. Toiletten sind bei uns auf höchstem standard, zum Glück. Manchmal sind sogar die Bahntoiletten akzeptabel, um die ich besonders froh bin.

A perfect painting for a plumber? I find such a toilet paper dispenser is something typically Swiss. Toilets are held to high standards here, thankfully. Sometimes even the toilets on the trains and at train or bus stations are acceptable, for which I am especially glad.

Heute wurde ich von einem Reporter und einem Fotograph begleitet und verfolgt. Da brauchte ich so einiges an Zeit, bis ich mir einen ruhigen Platz zum Malen der Bahnhof Uhr fand. Der Zug fuhr mir ab, doch zum Glück stand auf dem Gleis noch ein Zug derselben sorte, den ich abmalen konnte.

Today, for the upcoming article in Schweizer Familie, I was followed by a reporter and photographer. It took me a bit longer than usual to find a "quiet" place in the busy mainstation of Lucerne. My desired subject today was the typical SBB clock that appears in probably every Swiss train station. The train drove away, but on the track to the other side, one exactly like it still sat that I was able to paint.

Dieses Bild war ein rechter 'Krampf'. Eigentlich wollte ich eine Primula von nahem abmalen, doch dieses von oben herab hätte nichts gegeben. Liegend hätte ich auch mehr Schaden angestellt. Also malte ich gleich die ganze Wiese. Ich war nicht so zufrieden, aber irgendwie finde ich das Bild nun lustig und dekorativ.

This painting was a right and proper "cramp". Really I wanted to paint a Common Primrose up close, but to try this from above would have brought nothing. Lying down while painting I would have just caused more damage. So I just painted an entire section of the field. I wasn't too happy with the painting in the end, but I still find it somehow amusing and decorative.

Ein zweites Portrait zum Ersatz der Karikaturen, dass ich wiederum nicht verwenden wollte. Bilder wie dieses weichen vom Grundmotto der "Schweizer Reise" ab. Ich habe mir eben auch zeitweise erlaubt, zu malen was mir gefällt, und woran ich üben wollte.

A second portrait to possibly replace the caricatures on the "About Us" site, that I also chose not to use. Paintings like this deviate from the motto "Swiss Travels" (the theme I try to keep to this year). I have also taken time, though, to paint a few things I like and thus improve on this or that which I should practice.
This shows the division of work for the project: I paint, Angelika manages the brunt of the computer work.
