Hier in der Region bin ich aufgewachsen. Das Limmattal hat goldenen Ecken, zum Beispiel das Wiesental oberhalb von Geroldswil, ein wunderschöner Ort, so nahe und doch so fern. Heute war es um die 0 grad - ein schnelles Bild.
Here in the region I grew up. The Limmat Valley has its golden corners, vor example the Wiesental (Meadow Valley) above Geroldswil, a wonderful place, so close and yet screened off. Today it was around the freezing point - a quick picture.
Hier in Muhen hat es ein aussergewöhnliches Museum - es bietet von Aussen schon ein Spektakel. Ich hatte meinen Regenschutz nicht dabei, der Schnee wischte mir sanft die Farbe vom Brett. Ich musste auf die moderne Technik zurückgreifen und zuhause weitermalen.
Here in Muhen there is an extraordinary Museum in a straw-thatched building- a spectacular view itself. I didn't have my rain-protection with me, so the snow gently removed the paint from my board. I accessed modern technology and finished the painting at home.

Hier in der Innerschweiz und andernorts kommen die Sternsinger. Die junge Gruppe von Königen und Helfern singt zum Fest Dreikönigen, zum Segen der Häuser und deren Bewohner, und sammelt nebenbei Gaben für wohltätige Zwecke.
Die Kinder standen für ein Foto still, mein Gemälde hätte eindeutig zu lange gedauert.
Übrigens, für jene, die diesen Brauch kennen und pflegen: Dieses Bild könnte als Eingangstafel dienen: die letzten zwei Ziffern sind Kreide, also abwischbar und somit bis 2099 erneuerbar! Danach müssen Ihre Nachkommen zusätzlich die Null abschleifen.
Here in Switzerland come the Starsingers. The young groups of "Kings and helpers" sing on the feast of Epiphany, for the blessing of the houses and their residents and collects money for a beneficial purpose. The kids held still for a photo - a painting would have taken too long this time.
For those who know the custom and keep it: The painting can be used as an entry sign. The last two numbers are written with chalk, can easily be wiped off and renewed each year up to 2099. Then your ancestors have to sand off the zero.

This wakes memories! This sweet white bread is called Three Kings Cake, made for this day of the year by the bakeries. At home, the one who finds the plastic firgurine inside of his piece of bread (and there is only one figurine per cake) gets to wear the crown for the day! Anyway a very delicious tradition here in Switzerland, on the day of Epiphany.
(As a last note, Angelika found the king in this one...)
Das weckt Erinnerungen! Dieser Kuchen hat es in sich. Derjenige, der den versteckte Plastikfigur darin findet, wird für den Tag zum König gekrönt (und hat sich hoffentlich nicht einen Zahn ausgebissen!). Wie sich die Person an diesem Tag zu benehmen hat ist freigestellt! Eine Köstlichkeit bleibt diese Tradition für alle, am Fest der "Drei Weisen aus dem Osten", "Dreikönigen", oder schlicht "Epiphanie".
Auf dem Weg zur 'Madonna del Sasso' bin ich für den Sonnenuntergang an einem wunderschönen Ort aus dem Bus gestiegen.
On the way to 'Madonna del Sasso' (a famous Christian pilgrimage site in the area), I stepped out of the bus for the sunset at a wonderful overlook.

Hier in Paradiso sieht es wirklich paradiesisch aus (im richtigen Blickwinkel!). Die Berge ganz weit hinten rechts sind italienischer Boden. Links im Bild sind die Alpen und an der Küste des Luganosees die Stadt Lugano.
Here in Paradiso it really looks paradisal (from the right point of view!) In the very far back to the right, one can see Italian mountains. To the left are the Swiss alps, and on the shore of Lake Lugano is the city of Lugano.

Das winterliche Maggiatal, oder zu italienisch: Valle Maggia. Weitläufig ist das Maggiatal: 50 Minuten mit dem Bus von Locarno nach Cevio. Mit dem Lauf der Sonne begann der Felsen zur Linken an zu glitzern. Oben ist die bemalte, Eingangsdecke des uralten Kirchengebäudes. Sie sieht in Realität natürlich viel schöner aus.
The winterly Maggia-Valley, far reaching into the Alps. It took 50 minutes for us with the Bus from Locarno to Cevio. With the changing angle of the sunlight, the valley's rock wall to the left started to shine. Above is the painted entrance roof of the ancient church-building of Cevio - it is of course much neater in reality.

Fitting to the Carnival-Season (called "Fasnacht" which roughly means "fasting-night") the card-players, or "Jasser" meet for a game.
For those who don't recognize them: These are 4 figures from the Swiss Jass-playing cards. From left to right, their names are: The Oak-Upper, the Rose-Under, the Bell-Under and the Shield-Under. The only definite smoker is the Oak-Upper. Even on the card, the Bell-Under is not depicted with smoke, although he does have a pipe. He looks quite smug--I bet he has a good card to play.

Ich habe mir sagen lassen, dass dies zwei traditionelle Krienser Figuren sind - links das "Berner-Weib", rechts der "Krienser Deckel", mit der Baumrinde auf dem Kopf. Ich durfte die zwei Figuren aus dem Schaufenster der Apotheke Neustadt malen. Vielen Dank für diese Gelegenheit!
I let myself be told that these were two traditional Carnival-Figures from Kriens, the neighbour town of Lucerne. In the parades, people dress up as these characters, with real wooden masks.
To the left stands the Bernese-hag (Berner-Weib) and the Krienser-cap (Krienser-Deckel), with his treebark on his head. I painted them from the display window of the Neustadt Pharmacy, which I thank kindly.

Dieses zweite Bild von derselben Ecke (b) habe ich in beträchtlich kürzerer Zeit hergestellt. Was ich aber mit der Stoppuhr nicht messen konnte, waren die vielen Stunden Arbeit am ersten Bild, die mich für die Betrachtung trainiert und eingeübt hatten.
This second picture from the same corner I fabricated in much shorter time. However, what wasn't measurable with the stop-watch was the many hours of observing during the developement of the first painting which trained and prepared me for this one.

These are a traditional treat around Fasnacht, made simply of flour, salt, eggs, and cream, then deep-fried in a pot and dusted with powdered sugar. One can buy a pack of 8 or so cakes in the store, and after painting these tasty ones, they did not last the rest of the day. Yum!

Hier in Romont war überhaupt nicht viel los. Die Landschaft war wunderschön, aber ich fror.
There wasn't much going on in Romont. The landscape was beautiful, but I was freezing.
Mein rostiges Französisch kommt öfters wieder mal in Bewegung, so dass ich heute in La-Chaux-De-Fonds das bäuerliche, kunsthandwerkliche Museum besuchen konnte.Zum Glück, im strömenden Regen male ich nur ungern. Die Inhaberin liess mir freie Hand. Ich liess die künstlichen Lichter abstellen und benutzte meine Stirnlampe, um die Stimmung dieses Raums aus früheren Zeiten optimal einzufangen.
My rusty French came once more into action, so that I could visit the Crafts & Rural Museum (Musée paysan et artisanal). Gladly, for I try to avoid painting in the pouring rain! The owner let me run free. I let the artificial lights be turned off and used my head-light to catch the mood of this old room.

Ein weiteres Stilleben, das später gegessen wurde...Fondue ist eine Schweizer Käse Tradition. Es schafft Kontakt unter den Leuten - wenn man mit der Gabel die Brotwürfel im gemeinsamen Käse-Topf tunkt.
Another still-life, that was eaten later. Fondue is another cheese tradition. It helps you get in contact with other people. One sets the pot in the center of the table, and with the Fondue-fork you pick up breadcubes and dunk them in the common melted cheese in the Fondue-pan.

Eine echte, alte Lötschentaler-Maske. Besonders die Alten Masken haben einen sehr eigenartigen Ausdruck, der mich an Atzteken-Figuren erinnerte.
Ich habe keine Ähnlichkeit zu den Einwohnern des Lötschentals bemerkt.
In the Lötschen-Valley, a special 'species' of masks and a custom developed. They are worn in the days before Lent. I didn't recognize a big similarity to the inhabitants that I met, though.
Diese Frauen habe ich im Zug getroffen. Sie haben mir erlaubt, ein Foto zu schiessen, die Zeit hätte für ein Gemälde vor Ort nicht gereicht.
These two women I met in the train. They allowed me to take a photo, as there wasn't enough time to paint on site.

Museumsbeleuchtung macht sich nicht immer gut auf einem Bild, so habe ich mich für eine simple Einfärbung entschieden. Vielleicht werde ich noch etwas daran arbeiten. Ein besseres Foto folgt auch noch.
Museumlight isn't always the best for a painting, so I chose a simple coloration. Perhaps I will work on this some more. A better scan follows soon.

This friendly fellow I've met in Bern. He told me about his travels in far-away countries.
I liked painting him also, because he reminded me of the faces in a computer game that was about sea-travelers. I find he has something of a sailor. One can surely see he's content.
Diesen freundlichen Menschen habe ich in Bern angetroffen. Er hat mir ein bisschen von seinen Reisen erzählt.
Ich finde, man sieht ihm die Zufriedenheit an.
Ich mochte das Bild auch gerne malen, weil es mich an ein Computerspiel erinnert hat, das mit Seefahrer zu tun hatte. Ich könnte mir ihn - rein visuell - gut als Matrose vorstellen.

Outside today it was so blue and bright, that I didn't really know where I should sit to paint. So I eventually decided to take the S-Bahn ("Schnell-Bahn", meaning Fast-Train) to a museum, when I noticed that the underground S-Bahn station in Zürich was pretty special in itself. I also know it well from earlier--perhaps that helped.
I placed myself at a place in which I (hopefully) bothered no one. It took a bit longer than usual to paint, because of the train that kept stopping at the platform which I didn't wish to add into the painting. I thank for the polite comments and compliments that passer-bys said.
Heute war es mir draussen wohl zu blau und zu grell, ich wusste nicht recht, wo ich mich platzieren sollte. Also wollte ich die S-Bahn zu einem Museum nehmen, als ich merkte, dass die S-Bahn Station in Zürich doch sehr speziell waren. Ich kannte sie selber auch von früher, vielleicht half das mit. Ich platzierte mich an einen Ort, an dem ich (hoffentlich) niemanden störte. Es dauerte etwas länger als sonst, da mir immer wieder für das Bild unerwünschte Züge vorfuhren. Ich bedanke mich für die netten Bemerkungen und Komplimente bei den Passanten.

The work with the computer is a welcome change. It takes about the same amount of time as a real painting. On demand I will create a wooden panel of this picture for you.
Die Arbeit am Computer ist mir eine willkommene Abwechslung. Es braucht etwa gleich viel Arbeit wie ein Gemälde. Auf Wunsch werde ich von diesem Bild wie bei allen Computerbildern eine Holztafel anfertigen.
This friend had part in inspiring me to this project. Last fall we sat portrait for each other. This is one result of it. It is unsellable, but stands as an example for a possible portrait commission I could do for you.
Dieser Freund hat mich zu meinem Projekt mit inspiriert. Wir sassen für uns letzten Herbst Portrait. Dies ist ein Resultat davon. Es ist unverkäuflich, aber steht als Beispiel für einen möglichen Portrait Auftrag, den ich für Sie erledigen kann.
