Ein richtiges Schweizer Frühstück, Zopf, Butter, und Konfitüre. Das hier ist (oder 'war') übrigens Quittenkonfitüre.
Zopf Slices
A real Swiss breakfast, braided bread (zopf), butter and marmelade. This here (or 'was') is a quince jelly.
Hier haben wir unsere diesjährigen Ski-Ferien verbracht, in Obersaxen. Fast 10 mal durfte ich im Leben schon diesen schönen Ort besuchen, wobei das Ski-Fahren jährlich abnahm. Dieses Jahr nahm ich die Skis (big feet) garnicht erst mit, sondern nur das Mal-Arsenal. Gleich bei der Ankunft, zog mich der Sonnenuntergang an diesen Ausblickpunkt.
View from Affeier, Obersaxen
Here we spent our ski-vacations of this year, in Obersaxen. Almost 10 times in my lifetime I could visit this beautiful place, whereas the skiing decreased annualy. This year, I didn't even take my skis (BigFeet) with me, only my painting arsenal.
Just at the arrival I was drawn to this lookout point, to capture the sunset.

Heute ging ich nach Ilanz, wo die Autobusse der Post schön aufgereiht auf die Fahrgäste warten. Die Sonne brannte mir auf den Kopf, und so machte ich mir aus einem Blatt Papier einen nicht gerade modisch aussehenden Sonnenhut.

Today I went to Ilanz, where the Postbuses, nicely arrayed, waited for their passengers. The sun burned down on my head, so I made myself a not very trendy looking sun hat.

Kurz bevor der graue Winterschleier über das Tal kam, durfte ich das prächtige Sonnenlicht am Hinterrhein malen.Es war wunderschön, hier am rauschenden Fluss. Angelika picknickten danach im Auenwald hinter uns.
Ich möchte das Bild noch verbessern, darum ist der Preis noch nicht gemacht.
Versam-Safien, Picnic spot in the Auenwald
Shortly before the grey winter veil came over the valley, I could paint this splendid sunlight on the Hinter-Rhine river. It was beautiful, here on the roaring waters. Angelika and I picniced afterwards in the Auenwald ("meadow-forest") behind us.
I'd like to improve the painting, this is why the price isn't yet set .

Dieser Ort ist auf einem Hügel unter den Sesselliften von Meierhof zur Station Kartitscha. Alle zwei Schritte sackten wir bis zu den Hüften in Schnee ein. Es war etwas mühsam, hat sich aber gelohnt. Es ist ein lustiges Bild, wie Menschen in Sesseln einem über die Köpfe schweben. Wieder einmal hatte ich für einige Momente Sonne, bevor es bedeckt wurde, und ich zu einer anderen Technik greifen musste, wie das nächste Bild zeigt.

This place is on a hill below the skilifts from Meierhof to station Kartitscha. Every two steps we sagged into the snow up to the hips. It was a little tiresome, but worthwhile. It is a funny picture, how people in seats float above our heads. Once again I had the sun for a few instances before it got cloud-covered, forcing me to change the style, as the next picture shows.

Nach dem letzten Bild, wurde der Himmel von Wolken überdeckt. Diese eher illustrative Art war nun ideal, um all die Gegenstände darzustellen, während die Farben gerne eine andere Funktion haben durften. Zum Glück war Angelika da, die mir ein Dach spannte, als es ein wenig zu regnen begann. Nachher wärmten wir uns im Restaurant auf.

After I painted the previous picture, the sky began to cloud over. This more illustrative way of painting was ideal, then, to show objects and people, while the colors served another function. Thankfully Angelika was there, to hold the sled as a roof over the painting when it began sprinkling. Afterwards we warmed up in the Restaurant and enjoyed a cream of mushroom soup together.

Dies ist das erste Bild von derselben Situation in anderer Jahreszeit. Das erste Bild malte ich in strömendem Regen, mithilfe meines Unterstands für das Bild. Das zweite Bild malte ich während dem schneien -am Schluss hatte ich 3 cm Schnee über meiner Palette und den Sachen. Es war zweimal ein Kraftakt.

This is the first painting of the same location in another season. The first painting I made in the pouring rain--made possible by my home-made 'painting booth'. The second painting I did in the snow, also with the booth. In the end, I had about 3cm of snow on my palette and things. It was a battle of wills both times.

Das Kirchengebäude von Saint Trinité nenne ich eine Sehenswürdigkeit der Stadt Genf. Nicht viele Bauwerke bieten einen solchen Anblick, und das innere ist heimisch und futuristisch zu gleich.

This futuristic vehicle was exhibited in the train-station of Geneva Airport. I wanted to visit the Auto-Salon, but since my object was found outside, there was no need to make the choice harder.

Am morgen hatte ich das schlechte Gefühl, es sei nicht gut dorthin zu gehen. Ich wollte die Mythen Berge nochmals malen, winterlich. Der morgen war strahlend sonnig, aber ich war zu spät aufgestanden. Ich wusste, die Sonne würde nur am morgen die Berge bescheinen. Trotzdem versuchte ich es. Die Situation war aber noch schlechter als ich dachte. Die Sonne versteckte sich nicht nur hinter den zwei Bergen, sondern auch hinter dichten Wolken, die starke, bissige Winde bliesen. Ich konnte so unmöglich malen, eher würde es mich fortwinden. Also sass ich im Häuschen der Bushaltestelle, um mein Mittagessen einzunehmen, auf den nächsten Bus wartend. Die Busse fuhren stündlich, aber genau zu dieser Tageszeit viel einer aus, also musste ich 2 Stunden warten. Als ich aus dem Unterstnad hinausschaute, hatte ich die idee! Wenn ich schon kein Panorama malen konnte, wollte ich wenigstens ein Stücklein davon. Ich putzte mit etwas Schnee und einem Papiertüchlein die Fensterscheibe, arrangierte meine Sachen und begann dieses kleine Bildchen zu malen, von meinem Lieblingsteil des Himmels. Der Helikopter kam gleich vorbei, als ich bereit dafür war. Das Bild wurde fertig, 5 Minuten bevor der Bus mich heimwärts auflud, zufrieden und mit einer Portion Glück, wie so oft.
In the morning I had the bad feeling, that it wasn't a good idea to go there again. I wanted to paint the Mythen mountains again, winterly. The morning was great, sunny. But I got up too late. I knew the sun would only shine onto the mountains in the morning. Still, I gave it a try. The situation was worse than I expected: The sun wasn't only hiding behind the mountains, but also behind massiv clouds that blew a mean, strong, cold wind. I could impossibly paint in this weather, I'd rather be blown away. So I sat there in the cover of the Bus stop booth, to eat my lunch and wait on the next bus. The buses drove back hourly. But in this special hour of the day, one bus skipped, so it was 2 hours of waiting. When I looked out of the bus stop booth, I had the idea! If I couldn't paint a panorama today, I could paint at least a piece of it! So I took snow and tissues, cleaned the window of the booth, installed myself and painted this little picture of what to me seemed the nicest part of the sky. The helicopter came right by when I was ready for it! It was finished 5 minutes before the bus picked me up homeward, content, and lucky as so often.

Er ist ein Strassen-Wischer zu Bern. "I wisch for you" steht auf seinem Rücken.Ohne ihn und seine Kollegen würden die Städte der Schweiz ziemlich mies aussehen. Es gibt leute die denken absichtlich nichts dabei, wenn sie ihren Dreck fallen lassen, wie Kühe auf den Wiesen (einfach noch unwelt-unverträglicher). Einige glauben sich dabei noch als 'Arbeits-beschaffend'. Ich nenne es reine Faulheit auf der einen Seite und unsere gewisse Wirtschaft auf der anderen, die diesem Verhalten dient und es unterstützt.
Zum Bild: Mein Strassenwischer hier ist etwas speziell. Sein Wischen bringt 'Licht' oder 'weiss' auf die Stadt, fast als würde auch er malen. Ich hoffe, diese Idee komme rüber!

He is a street-sweeper in Bern. "I wisch (dialect for sweep, but sounds like the English word for wish) for you" is printed on the back of his jacket.
Without him and his peers, the cities of Switzerland would look gross. Some people tend to think absolutly nothing when they drop their waste right where they stand, like cows on the meadows. Some of those actually think of themselves as 'job-providing'!? I call it pure laziness on one hand and our certain kind of economy that serves and supports this behavior.
To the painting: My figure is bringing 'light' or 'white' into the city, as if he was painting it. I hope this idea came across.

Die Sonne weckte mich heute auf, und sogleich eilte ich zum Fenster, um eine feine Decke Neuschnee zu sehen. So wusste ich, heute war ein weiteres Winter-Pendant möglich. Ich nahm den Zug, aber der Schnee nahm immer mehr ab. Als ich ankam, begann es aber leicht zu schneien. Ich lieh mir zur Sicherheit einen Regenschirm im Tourist-Center von Escholzmatt aus. Zum zweiten Mal erklomm ich den Gipfel des Schwendelbergs, um die Kapelle mit dem Ausblick zu malen. Oben angekommen drückte immer wieder die Sonne durch. Ich hatte das bestmögliche vom Tag: Kurz nach Fertigstellung, wurde der Schnee und der Wind heftiger, machte das malen unmnöglich -aber ich hatte mein Resultat! Eine Gute Bekannte holte mich mit dem Auto ab und ersparte mir den gelenkschädigenden Abstieg! Ich habe Glück...

The sun woke me up today, and I immediately rushed to the window to see the delicate layer of new snow. Thus, I knew another snow-painting was possible. I took the train, but the snow became less and less the further I went. When I arrived in Escholzmatt, though, it began to snow lightly. I borrowed, for safety's sake, an umbrella from the tourist center in town. For the second time I climbed walked up the hill to the Schwendelberg peak, to paint the chapel and view again. Up top, the sun kept poking through the clouds. I had the best part of the day: shortly after finishing, the snow and wind came stronger, making painting no longer possible--but I already had my result! A good friend picked me up with the car, and saved me the joint-battering descent with my heavy backpack! I have such luck...

Dies ist mein erstes Bild aus meinem Heimatort. Die Autobahn A4 bildet ein Dach über die Limmat, das hat mich schon als Kind fasziniert.
In der Mitte der Arbeit rief mich eine Verpflichtung verfrüht weg. Ich werde das Bild an einem anderen Tag fertigstellen.

This is my first picture from my home town. The highway A4 makes a roof over the Limmat, which has fascinated me since my childhood.
In the middle of my work, an important duty called me away. I will hopefully finish the painting on another sunny morning like this.

Die Fernseh-Serie MacGyver portraitierte einen Helden, der mit Ideen und Seinen Kenntnissen der Naturgesetze seine Gegner ausser Kraft setzte, und auf Schusswaffen-Gewalt verzichtete. Eines seiner wichtigsten Werkzeuge war das Schweizer Sackmesser. Es war eine herausfordernde Übung, dieses Portrait zu gestalten.

The TV-Show MacGyver portrayed a hero, who disarmed his enemies with ideas and his knowledge of the natural laws (chemics, physics, mainly). He never used a gun, and avoided killing. One of his most important tools was the Swiss Army Knife. It was a very challenging exercise to make a portrait of these two.
