Yet again it rained into my picture, and yet again I was on the Allmend in Luzern. The Allmend is my 'good excuse' for a picture, because with the many different festivals, circuses, exhibitions and more, it makes for good subjects sometimes.

The Zytturm ('TimeTower') I had planned on painting for a while, but I kept avoiding it. The street is rather heavily used. Is that why no one spoke to me, or was it because I haven't shaved in a while? I find it in any case not to be a comfortable place to talk. The time painting was good, though, and I'm glad for the picture I achieved.

Den Zytturm hatte ich schon lange geplant, aber ich habe mich darum gedrückt. Die Strasse ist recht stark befahren. Hat mich deshalb niemand angesprochen, oder weil ich mich nicht rasiert habe? Ich fand es jedenfalls kein angenehmer Gesprächsort. Das Malen ging mir aber gut, und um das Bild bin ich froh.

The Castle Hallwyl one can look at from many angles. At first I wanted to do many views at once upon the board, but this first choice here pleased me so much, I decided to just do this one.

Das Schloss Hallwyl kann man auf viele verschiedene Weisen betrachten. Zuerst wollte ich gleich mehrere Ansichten auf's mal malen, doch mit dieser ersten Wahl hier, freundete ich mich alsbald an.

Castle Lenzburg

That same afternoon I painted Castle Hallwyl, I went further down the train line to Lenzburg. The view of Castle Lenzburg might be considered ordinary by this neighborhood, but I found it extra-ordinary! I wasn't satisfied with the idea to only have the castle viewed from far away in the painting. So, I walked high over the roofs of Lenzburg, half as high up the hill as the castle. Then this play of color in the sky appeared when the sun disappeared behind a thick cloud. I found my viewpoint.

Am gleichen Abend fuhr ich weiter nach Lenzburg. In diesem Wohnquartier ist diese Ansicht wohl normal, ich fand sie aussergwöhnlich! Ich konnte mich nicht mit der Idee zufrieden geben, nur das Schloss auf dem Bild zu haben, von weitem. Also lief ich hoch über die Dächer von Lenzburg, auf halbe Höhe zum Schloss. Dann bot sich mir dieses Farbenspiel, als die Sonne hinter einer dicken Wolkenwand auf abtauchte.

Ich glaube Skateparks gefallen André sehr.

I was already a little tired on my way home, but thought anyway "Eh, I can fit one more painting in." Oh man, if I'd only ignored that voice instead of trying out that idea.
This is the worst painting I've done up till now, and I plan to replace it with the next opportunity, guaranteed!

Ich war schon etwas müde auf der Heimreise, dachte aber "einer geht noch rein". Oh man, hätt' ich's doch lieber sein gelassen, als diese komische Idee ausprobiert. Mein schlechtestes Bild bis jetzt, das ich bei Gelegenheit garantiert ersetzen werde.

Before my trip to the west of Switzerland, I realized a similarity between two of my mountain panoramas: one from Tessin and one from Graubünden. Here in St. Ursanne I thought a third one could be added. And lookee here, it worked!

This is the largest surface I've ever painted on in the 365mal.ch series. Really it is six pictures in one. So many different stages in just one kind of flower, is that not amazing?

How could I have, on this fresh morning, gone by this panorama without painting a picture? I painted from the left to the right, and somewhat in the middle I loosened my gaze and began to paint a bit more loosely. It reminds me strongly on the picture of #016 "Mythen von Brunni aus" that I painted in August of last year.

To the right of the middle, one sees the village Bauen.

Wie hätte ich an diesem frischen morgen an diesem Panorama vorbeigehen können? Ich malte von links nach rechts, und etwa in der Mitte lockerte ich meinen Blick und begann etwas grosszügiger zu malen. Es erinnerte mich stark an das Bild der Mythen vom Brunni aus, das ich im August letzten Jahres gemalt habe.

In der Mitte rechts sieht man das Dorf Bauen.

On The Swiss Path

Had not such a friendly person guided me up the mountainside, I probably would not have done it by myself. The weather was not very promising, and I was already tired from painting two pictures earlier in the day. I don't regret a single second, though, when I look at this extra-ordinary result before me. I packed a small viewing angle on a small panorama format. (That was just right for my half-expended strength.)

Hätte mich nicht so eine freundliche Person hier auf den Berg geführt, hätte ich es alleine wohl nie gewagt. Das Wetter war nich viel versprechend, und ich war von den letzten zwei Bildern schon etwas müde. Ich bereue es nun aber keine Sekunde, wenn ich dieses aussergewöhnliche Resultat vor mir sehe. Ich hatte ein kleinen Ausschnitt auf ein kleines Format gepackt, das entsprach gerade meinen halbverbrauchten Kräften.

The composition came out differently than it did in winter, but the paintings can stand well on their own. The painting situation was quite similar to in winter: clouded-over skies and a cold wind. This time, though, I had twice as much time to paint before sunset came.

Die Komposition kam anders raus als im Winter, aber die Bilder sollen auch alleine gut dastehen. Es war sonst sehr ähnlich: Bedeckter Himmel, und kalter Wind. Nur hatte ich diesmal doppelt soviel Zeit.

For this here I went down the road to the Luzerner Allmend. Soon this nice field will be plowed out of the way to make place for the two 'necessary' skyscrapers and new stadium. The ball I was able to borrow from the friendly field warden. Many thanks!

Für dieses hier ging ich die Strasse runter an unsere Luzerner Allmend. Bald wird auch dieser Platz verschwinden und den 2 Hochhäusern und dem neuen Stadion weichen. Den Ball erhielt ich freundlicherweise vom Platzwart. Vielen Dank!

Today we hiked from Niederrickenbach to Klewenalp. It was a rainy day. At one point, the narrow hiking trail across a steep hillside was covered with a meter of snow. After we'd walked a good hundred meters across the snowfield, we came to an avalanche field that we had to cross. Going over the rougher snow was more difficult. When we arrived at the other end of the path, by the restaurant Tannibüel, we found that from that direction the path was corded off with a sign saying, "Path closed due to danger of avalanches" Hmm, would have been good to see that on the other end as well.
From Klewenalp we took the gondola down to Beckenried, where I painted this picture of the Rigi mountain and Lake of Luzern. I only had my little box of school-grade watercolors, and gave even more effort than usual because of them.

Wir wanderten heute zur Klewenalp. Es war ein regnerischer Tag. An einer steilen Stelle war der schmale Wanderweg mit einem Meter Schnee überdeckt. Als wir die gut hundert Meter über den Schnee schafften, kamen wir noch zu einer kleinen heruntergegangenen Lawine. Angekommen bei Tannibüel fanden wir eine Absperrung vor, die den Weg auf dem wir gekommen waren, absperrte, wegen Lawinengefahr. Unten in Beckenried angekommen, malte ich dieses Bild von der Rigi, ich hatte nur die Schulwasserfarben dabei, gab mir umso mehr Mühe.

Angelika took this photo some time ago. At home I cropped the picture to this format, and it pleased me (us) so much that I spontaneously decided to paint it today. The ship to the back-right is the paddleboat steamer Stadt Luzern, she says, but she cannot recall what the other two were. Taken looking south over the Lake of Luzern.

Fairly late in the morning, we left Luzern for the Weissenstein in canton Solothurn. Many paragliders chose this as their springoff place. We didn't go to the top, but stepped out in the middle station, Nesselboden.
When we saw the paragliders soar by above our heads, I hadn't unpacked my painting gear just yet, so I took a few photos. I plan to put them in later. I finished this painting 10 minutes before the last chairlift ride down, and we almost missed it. Almost.

Schon etwas spät gingen wir heute auf den Weissenstein. Viele Gleitschirmflieger kamen hier herunter. Ich hatte mein Malzeug leider noch nicht aufgestellt, dafür nahm ich von ihnen ein paar Fotos, und werde Sie nachträglich noch einfügen. Fast hätten wir die letzte Talfahrt verpasst.

At the base station in Oberdorf we waited on our train, eating supper as we did. As the train to Delémont was about to arrive, the light fell so beautifully through the station doors, that we debated on whether we should stay and I should paint, or if we should get in the train (due in one minute) and go further. We decided the former, and I painted this picture swiftly, before the setting sun disappeared behind the hilltop. I regretted not one minute of that time.

Unten angekommen in Oberdorf, warteten wir auf den Zug und assen dabei zu abend. Als der Zug nach Delemont kam, fiel das Licht so schön in den Bahnhof hinein, dass wir hin- und hergerissen den Zug ohne uns weiterfahren liessen. Ich malte dieses Bild schnell bevor die Sonne hinter dem Hügel verschwand, und bereute es keine Minute.

Halfway to the Vorbourg, I halted suddenly on the path in the woods. Angelika played the umbrella--holding a rain shield patiently over my painting as I worked--because the leafy roof above wasn't quite enough to stop the drops.

By the chapel from Vorbourg one had an impressive view. Unfortunately, I was so tired from all the walking and travelling, that I didn't dare try a painting. I did make quite a successful sketch of an over 180° view, and plan to use my photos as reference to paint this.

Bei der Kapelle von Vorbourg hat man eine tolle Aussicht. Leider war ich so müde von der Reiserei, dass ich micht nicht an ein Gemälde wagte. Ich machte aber ein gelungene Skizze von über 180° und werde sie anhand den Fotos kolorieren.

This was a still-life of rhubarb leaves that first ended up quite bland--the light from the kitchen window just disappeared. So I painted a little something (or someone) extra to liven it up.
